November 2

El Día de los Muertos

or All Souls’ Day

(The Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints’ Day which occurs on Nov 1st and All Souls’ Day which occurs on Nov 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

Anything Less Than Full Disclosure is Unacceptable

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Ron Paul – Texas

Last week a new bill was introduced in the Senate to audit the Federal Reserve. Some backers of my bill HR1207 and the existing Senate companion bill S.604 were a little miffed at this, but depending on how you think about it, this new legislation poses no great threat to our efforts.

With the economy in shambles, people are looking for answers – not just because of lost savings on Wall Street, but because of lost houses on Main Street. Because of the many problems we face, the Federal Reserve and its powers over the economy have come under scrutiny. This translates into a lot of political pressure on Congress. With all the House Republicans signed on as co-sponsors and over half of the Democrats, HR 1207 has enormous bipartisan support. It would be disingenuous for Washington not to embrace the principles behind this bill after all the promises for transparency. How can one credibly argue for more transparency in government in one breath and defend the secrecy of the Federal Reserve in the next?

Gun Control sticking point for DC voting rights

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

OpEd by Glen Davis

Democrats hoped to get legislation passed that would give Washington D.C. a representive in the House. Republicans are all for it because it adds a representative from Utah which is a Republican leaning state. The sticking point has become an amendment—proposed by Constitution-supporting John Ensign and supported by the NRA—which would remove restrictive gun control laws in Washington.

The good folks at the Washington Post are complaining that, “Despite Democratic control of the White House and Congress, the 600,000-odd residents of the nation’s capital are no closer to getting their rights as American citizens.” If you are worried about giving them their “rights” as “American citizens,” why are you opposed to giving them all of their rights?

German party cool on Blair for EU

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

A senior politician in Germany has cast doubt on the suitability of British former Prime Minister Tony Blair to be president of the European Council.

The chief whip of Germany’s Free Democrats – the junior partner in the country’s new coalition – said he would prefer someone from a smaller country.

Eric Holder: What Hate Crimes really means.

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Eric Holder explained what hate crimes really means. It is NOT intended to be enforced to everyone. Mainly, it will not be used to protect white American Christian males who believe that homosexuality is wrong. They say it will apply to those who act on hate crimes by actually causing physical harm. However, incidents in Canada and England prove that theory wrong. If you hurt someones feelings with a post, you can be charged with “CyberBullying” and prosecuted under this statute. It is a clear violation of the Christian rights and an extension of the hate crime legislation imposed by—reformed KKK member—Supreme Court Justice Black, appointed, of course, by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in the form of “Separation of Church and State.”

Burning our bucks in the woods

Monday, October 26th, 2009

By Galen Barnett, The Oregonian
January 31, 2009

There’s nothing like a good forest fire year to stimulate the economy. Last year the federal government spent $1.4 billion to fight forest fires. Daily spending on a single wildfire can top $1 million as the Forest Service pumps out contracts to rent porta-potties, retardant bombers and bulldozers.

Firefighting is shovel-ready spending. Within minutes of a fire’s ignition, the Forest Service has on-the-ground incident command teams with contracting officers authorized to cut hundred-thousand dollar checks on the spot.

Money to get Re-Elected

Goldwater Institute Policy Brief

Executive Summary

Each year, American public officials spend millions in taxpayer funds to pay for broadcast ads, billboards, and glossy brochures under the umbrella of public service announcements. These officials often feature prominently in the ads, yielding increased name recognition and favorability ratings — objects of exceptional value — for them.

Public records requests by the Goldwater Institute show that between 2006 and 2008, elected officeholders in Arizona spent at least $4.2 million in public funds on name and photo placements in various official publications. Although some publications may serve the legitimate purpose of making citizens aware of new laws, many are undeniably self-promotional in nature — and done at the expense of taxpayers. The cost to taxpayers, however, is rarely disclosed to the public.

The use of public funds for what essentially constitutes campaigning is ethically and constitutionally suspect. Moreover, this practice puts others who attempt to run for office at a serious disadvantage. An incumbent who gets so much “free press” is a difficult opponent indeed. And for most elected officials, the lure of using public funds to self-promote is simply too great to resist.

For example, in her 2008 State of the State speech, former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano criticized the use of public funds for political self-promotion, stating, “Too often lately, we see this money go for TV commercials that amount to little more than publicity for an elected official. That’s the wrong way to use it.” However, Governor Napolitano’s office spent $150,000 to post her name and photo on colorful billboards around the state to promote tourism, among other questionable expenses.

Federal program taken advantage of by political insiders.

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Mary Rose Wilcox eked out a small profit from a Mexican restaurant she owned in south Phoenix before she used her race and status as the owner of a “disadvantaged” business to land a lucrative concession deal at Sky Harbor International Airport.

The long-entrenched Democrat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors reported $10,000 in profits from her El Portal restaurant in an August 2003 financial statement. In December 2004, Wilcox was brought into a joint venture to co-own a Chili’s franchise, the only full-service bar and restaurant in the main lobby of Terminal 4.

Seven months later, Wilcox reported profits of $113,000 from the Chili’s deal alone.

Climate change film debut draws supporters, critics

PRESCOTT – A documentary that seeks to debunk the Oscar-winning movie about Al Gore on global warming drew a near-capacity crowd Sunday evening in the Performance Hall at Yavapai College.

“Not Evil Just Wrong – The True Cost of Global Warming Hysteria” interviews experts who claim ice caps are melting because of natural causes, and contends measures to reduce carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels would be a financial burden for average Americans.
