Sen. Kyl Fires First Shot in Battle Over Next Supreme Court Nominee

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The battle over the next Supreme Court justice is already under way, as the No. 2 Republican in the Senate on Sunday would not rule out blocking a successor to Justice John Paul Stevens — who said in interviews published this weekend his retirement is on the horizon.

The battle over the next Supreme Court justice is already under way, as the No. 2 Republican in the Senate on Sunday would not rule out blocking a successor to Justice John Paul Stevens — who said in interviews published this weekend his retirement is on the horizon.

Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” warned President Obama not to try nominating anyone “overly ideological” to replace Stevens, who is known as the leader of the liberal wing of the court.

He suggested the party did not want anyone so outspoken as Sonia Sotomayor, who was picked to replace former Justice David Souter last year, and said the decision on whether the GOP will filibuster will “all depend” on who the next nominee is.

“I think the president will nominate a qualified person. I hope, however, he does not nominate an overly ideological person. That will be the test,” Kyl said. “And if he doesn’t nominate someone who is overly ideological, I don’t think — you may see Republicans voting against the nominee, but I don’t think you’ll see them engage in a filibuster.”

Secretary of State candidate speaks in Willcox

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Arizona Secretary of State Candidate, Sam Wercinski, addressed the Northern Cochise County Democrats meeting in Willcox Saturday morning.

He spoke of the need to fix the country’s broken election system. In the 2008 general election 15 percent of votes cast were done by provisional ballots and 4.5 percent of the total vote ended up NOT being counted. Not one of the nearly 45,000 voters whose ballots were not counted has been contacted with information on correcting the problem in the next election. Wercincki said, “We can do better, a lot better through technology and education.”

He gave the example of how he used technology and education to help Arizonans stay in their homes as Arizona Real Estate Commissioner when Janet Napolitano appointed him after the foreclosure crisis hit the state. He also shortened the time the Real Estate Commission office took in issuing licenses from six months to same day service.

Quayle Seeks GOP Convention For Phoenix

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

PHOENIX — Former Vice President Dan Quayle says he’s been putting his connections to work on behalf of Phoenix’s bid to secure the 2012 Republican National Convention.

The Paradise Valley resident helped pitch Phoenix to national Republican bigwigs and some of them visited Phoenix last month to check possible sites.

The city is on the GOP’s convention short list with Tampa, Fla., and Salt Lake City.

Quayle said that he knew some of those that visited and really pushed hard for Phoenix.

A final decision on a city is expected in August.

Quayle’s son Ben is running for Congress in Arizona.
