15 Protestors arrested in HB 2281 demonstration

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Tucson, AZ – (KGUN9-TV) – 15 people, 4 of them juveniles and 11 of them adults, were arrested for trespassing Wednesday afternoon in a protest at the state offices of education in Tucson.

The group was among hundreds of students, parents and educators who are vehemently against HB 2281, a new law signed by Governor Brewer Tuesday night, that restricts the teaching of ethnic studies in public schools.

“We do not support that bill. It is a racist bill against some ethnic studies classes,” said Erin Cane-Hodge, a Tucson High School senior.

“We need to be heard, we have a message , we have a purpose here and we have an objective. And we need to do what we need to do in this struggle to achieve that,” added Victoria Fay-Tellez, also a senior at Tucson High School.

Among those arrested were members of a small group that linked arms and blocked the entrance to the education office on the second floor. They remained there for nearly two hours before Tucson police officers corralled them into a room and then cited and released them.

University of Arizona professor and member of the Mexican-American Studies Advisory Board, Roberto Rodriquez, was one of 37 people who stayed behind as the protestors were cleared from the courtyard. He told KGUN 9 the bill is another attack on Chicanos.

Cultural Studies classes banned in Arizona

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

State schools chief Tom Horne, who has pushed the bill for years, said he believes the Tucson school district’s Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people.

Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race, he said.

“It’s just like the old South, and it’s long past time that we prohibited it,” Horne said.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer added fuel to the fire by signing HB 2881. The bill, “DECLARES THAT PUBLIC SCHOOL PUPILS SHOULD BE TAUGHT TO TREAT AND VALUE EACH OTHER AS INDIVIDUALS AND NOT BE TAUGHT TO RESENT OR HATE OTHER RACES OR CLASSES OF PEOPLE.” The bill signed Tuesday that targets Chicano studies programs currently being taught in Tucson schools.

1. PROMOTE THE OVERTHROW OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT.
2. PROMOTE RESENTMENT TOWARD A RACE OR CLASS OF PEOPLE.
3. ARE DESIGNED PRIMARILY FOR PUPILS OF A PARTICULAR ETHNIC GROUP.
4. ADVOCATE ETHNIC SOLIDARITY INSTEAD OF THE TREATMENT OF PUPILS AS INDIVIDUALS.

The bill specifically exempts the study of the Holocaust and other instances of genocide or the historical oppression of a particular group of people basesed on their ethnicity, race or class from the confines of the bill. It also provides that rules for discipline and expulsion cannot be related to sex, race, Nation origin or ancestry.

Some sources report that neither the governor nor the bill’s supporters have identified examples where Chicano studies have advocated the “overthrow” of the federal government.

U.N. “experts” have issued objections to both S.B. 1070 and the newly signed H.B. 2281.
