Irish to expel Israeli diplomat over Hamas killing

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The Irish Republic is to expel an Israeli diplomat over the use of fake passports in the killing of a Hamas official in Dubai.

Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said an investigation had proved that eight Irish passports used in the operation were forgeries.

Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was found dead in a Dubai hotel in January.

Dubai police have said they are 99% sure Israeli agents were involved, though Israel says there is no proof.

Mr Martin said in a statement that Israel had been “requested to withdraw a designated member of staff of its embassy” and that he expected the request would “be quickly acceded to”.

“The misuse of Irish passports by a state with which Ireland enjoys friendly, if sometimes frank, bilateral relations is clearly unacceptable and requires a firm response,” he said.

In Jerusalem, foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said the Israeli government regretted the Irish decision, which he said was “not in line with the importance of our relationship with the Irish government”.

Obama’s oil speech: were expectations too high?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

At several critical points in his career, President Barack Obama has turned to his considerable oratorical skills to help salvage his image.

When Mr Obama’s campaign was beset with criticism over his relationship with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, the then-senator gave an eloquent and widely-lauded assessment the state of race relations in American society.

When his healthcare bill looked to be on life support, Mr Obama rallied support for it before a joint session of Congress.

On Tuesday evening, Mr Obama chose to address the BP oil spill crisis from the illustrious Oval Office, a location soaked in historical importance and shrouded in seriousness, where past presidents have spoken of wars, tragedies and struggles.

In what were his first Oval Office remarks, Mr Obama spoke of waging a war on an oil spill that is “assaulting our shores and our citizens.”

He was resolute, at times calm and at times impassioned, projecting both gravity and sobriety.

Wikipedia unlocks divisive pages for editing

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The online encyclopaedia Wikipedia says it has taken an “important step” towards making it easier to edit some of its most controversial articles.

Up to 2,000 articles, including a page about former US President George W Bush, will have their strict editing restrictions relaxed.

Users will now be able to submit changes to the selected pages for review by senior editors.

It is part of Wikipedia’s ongoing efforts to curb vandalism of the site.

Wikipedia’s founder Jimmy Wales told BBC News that the new system, called “pending changes” will allow the site “to open up articles for general editing that have been protected or semi-protected for years.

“That’s what is exciting about this,” he said.

The new changes should make it easier for users to contribute to these pages, the site says.

Mr Wales said that he was pleased to see the pages opening up again.

“These have had to be semi-protected for years just because they are too tempting for naughty people to try something funny,” he said.
