Barack Obama considers sacking US general McChrystal

Barack Obama is considering whether to sack General Stanley McChrystal as military commander in Afghanistan after summoning him to the White House tomorrow to explain his derisive criticism of the President’s staff in a magazine article.

“McChrystal has been directed to attend the monthly meeting [on Wednesday] on Afghanistan and Pakistan in person,” a senior American official said so the general could “explain to the Pentagon and the commander in chief his quotes in the piece about his colleagues”.

The decision over whether to fire Gen McChrystal, the architect of a new counter-insurgency strategy designed to turn around the nine-year Afghan war, for insubordination is one of the most momentous of Mr Obama’s presidency.

It comes at a time when his Afghan surge strategy is faltering. Gen McChrystal has delayed the summer offensive on Kandahar and said that Marja, which was “cleared” in a major operation at the start of the year, was a “bleeding ulcer”.

In a profile in the magazine Rolling Stone by freelance journalist Michael Hastings, McChrystal told the magazine that he felt “betrayed” by Karl Eikenberry, the US ambassador to Kabul and a former three-star general, in a White House debate over war strategy last year.

Gen Stanley McChrystal’s uncomplimentary criticism of some of the Obama administration’s lead officials has given the president a stark choice: omit comments that come close to rebellion, or terminate his lead commander at a critical juncture in Afghanistan. I would not want to be in Obama’s position right now, even if these two men are assembling today to discuss it through. Quite dumb to make public destructive comments about your chief like that though.

Some question whether he is Commander-in-Chief. Since this guy voted for Obama, I doubt that is the case here. McChrystal is a soldier, however, and it would take a lot for him to come out with comments against any president.

  3. Do you think that the president should have put in General Petraeus. What will this do to the midterm election?

Absolutely nothing. What is going to affect the midterm election is the Communist systems the demoncrats have entrenched into the system because most people still think in terms of a “two-party” system which George Washington abhorred. Problem is that we will get Republicans who will give us their version of the same unconstitutional crap. Until people start drilling their candidates on the Constitution and making sure that they know it before they put them in office, we will get more of the same by different people.
