Helicopter flies over Schultz fire near Flagstaff---This and That Online Blog.

Flagstaff, Williams-The 3,400 acre Eagle Rock Fire 11 miles north east of Williams in northern Arizona is ninety-percent contained as of a few hours ago. The cause of the fire, which started on June 11, is still unknown. Williams has been unaffected by smoke and fire. The Williams Ranger District thanks all of the cooperating agencies that have assisted on this incident.

The 14,000 acre Schultz-Elden Trail fire north of Flagstaff is considered 20% contained with a low wind condition today helping fire fighters. Highway 89 is open in both directions with some delays to be expected. Evacuated areas include Timberline, Wupatki Estates, Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument, Hutchinson Acres, and scattered residences north of Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument.

Current plans are to continue to construct line and improve, and burn out line on the south, southeast, and north flanks of the fire, continue to patrol, and mop up on the east flank and monitor and control fire on the west with air operations.

This fire was started by a reckless camper leaving a smoldering camp fire. Fire restrictions in the Kaibab, Prescott and Coconino National Forests are now in effect. No smoking or camp fires are allowed outside of developed camp sites. Because of the fire danger, propane camp stoves are recommended. It is recommended that you camp only in developed camp sites so as not to get trapped. If you are hiking, let someone know where you are going and carry a cell phone for communications.

Obama relieves General McChrystal of command

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Gen. David H. Petraeus to take command. Soldiers appear to approve of the change.

WASHINGTON – Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s rocky term as the Afghan war commander ended in disgrace Wednesday and President Obama named Gen. David Petraeus to replace him.

In a Rose Garden address, Obama said he was sacking McChrystal “with considerable regret but also with the certainty it is the right thing to do.”

While professing admiration for McChrystal, Obama said that the general’s trash-talking of the chain of command “does not meet the standard that should be met by a commanding general.”

McChrystal’s resignation had been expected after his blatant show of disloyalty in mocking the civilian leadership in a Rolling Stone magazine article.

The replacement is apparently well received among the soldiers in Afghanistan.
