The 14,000 acre Schultz-Elden Trail fire north of Flagstaff is considered 20% contained with a low wind condition today helping fire fighters. Highway 89 is open in both directions with some delays to be expected. Evacuated areas include Timberline, Wupatki Estates, Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument, Hutchinson Acres, and scattered residences north of Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument.
Current plans are to continue to construct line and improve, and burn out line on the south, southeast, and north flanks of the fire, continue to patrol, and mop up on the east flank and monitor and control fire on the west with air operations.
This fire was started by a reckless camper leaving a smoldering camp fire. Fire restrictions in the Kaibab, Prescott and Coconino National Forests are now in effect. No smoking or camp fires are allowed outside of developed camp sites. Because of the fire danger, propane camp stoves are recommended. It is recommended that you camp only in developed camp sites so as not to get trapped. If you are hiking, let someone know where you are going and carry a cell phone for communications.
