I guess you can afford to do that when you are exempt from the Nationalized Health care system.

An early review of federal financial disclosure forms reveals some interesting tidbits about the Democratic leaders.

• House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul, who runs her financial portfolio, invested between $1 million and $5 million into a new professional sports league, the United Football League, in order to become the owner of the California Redwoods, a team based out of San Francisco.

Pelosi made three separate payments to the UFL in April, July and October 2009.

• Nancy Pelosi’s 2008 political memoir, “Know Your Power”, continues to outperform Nevada Sen. Harry Reid’s 2008 book, “The Good Fight”. The Senate majority leader collected no royalties for his book, while last year the House speaker collected $102,161 in royalties for hers.

• On Christmas Eve, after the Senate’s historic 60-40 vote for President Obama’s health-care legislation, Reid could not get a flight home to Nevada. So he turned to Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.), who along with her husband owns a private jet. Feinstein flew Reid to San Francisco, at an estimated cost of $3,625, according to Reid’s forms. Aides said that, from San Francisco, Reid flew to Reno, where he met up with his wife and family in time to celebrate Christmas.

Lawmakers sold off BP shares

Members of the congressional committees that oversee the oil and gas industry held more than $11 million in personal financial assets in that sector late last year, including at least $400,000 in the two companies at the heart of the Gulf of Mexico oil-drilling disaster.

From the nearly $100,000 in BP stock held by Rep. Frederick Upton (R-Mich.) to the nearly $650,000 in ConocoPhillips shares held by Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), lawmakers on five key panels with oversight of the oil industry held more than 110 assets in firms from that sector.

All told, the members of the five House and Senate committees had a minimum of $11.4 million in stock holdings in the oil and gas industry, with a maximum value that could have exceed $16.8 million, according to an analysis of financial disclosure forms released Wednesday.

Before the Gulf disaster, some lawmakers sold off shares in the companies at the center of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill for personal financial reasons. Among them was Kerry, whose wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, sold off the last remaining shares she held in Transocean, the company that owned the drilling rig.

At the end of 2009, however, Heinz family trusts still held between $350,000 and $750,000 in BP stock, coming in purchases last year.

Hard lessons over the weekend.

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Several incidents over the Independence day remind us that we need to be careful. Infants and toddlers move surprisingly fast when they learn to walk. Please keep an eye on them especially during the times when you have large groups around which might be a distraction. Take care while boating and make sure you remain aware of what is going on around you. Remember that you have to be more aware as a pedestrian if you chose to listen to a music player or talk on a cell phone as you walk.
