Human Head Found in Arizona Fuels Political Debate

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

FoxNews.com/Joshua Rhett Miller June 29: Rancher J. David Lowell indicates were the head of Francisco Fuentes Dominguez, 43, who was not a U.S. citizen, was found on Atascosa Ranch. (FNC)

A controversy is brewing in Arizona over assertions by advocates of more stringent immigration laws that drug and human traffickers have beheaded illegal immigrants as a warning to rival cartels operating along the Arizona-Mexico border.

At least one human skull has been found in the Arizona desert in recent years, officials said. But that was in 2008, and no evidence was found that indicated it was the result of a decapitation. Rather, the coroner in the case determined, it was torn from the rest of the body after death — most likely by a wild animal.

Pima County says it enforces immigration laws without SB1070

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

By Barbara Grijalva – email

Tucson, AZ (KOLD) – Arizona’s immigration enforcement law, S.B. 1070, is set to take effect in a little over two weeks, but Pima County made a deal more than two years ago to help enforce federal immigration law.

It’s part of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement 287(g) program that allows state and local police agencies to receive delegated authority for immigration enforcement.

There are other federal programs that allow cooperation between local and federal operations.

Wall Street Is Laundering Drug Money And Getting Away With It

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Too-big-to-fail is a much bigger problem than you thought. We’ve all read damning accounts of the government saving banks from their risky subprime bets, but it turns out that the Wall Street privilege problem is far more deeply ingrained in the U.S. legal system than the simple bailouts witnessed in 2008. America’s largest banks can engage in flagrantly criminal activity on a massive scale and emerge almost completely unscathed. The latest sickening example comes from Wachovia Bank: Accused of laundering $380 billion in Mexican drug cartel money, the financial behemoth is expected to emerge with nothing more than a slap on the wrist thanks to an official government policy which protects megabanks from criminal charges.

Bloomberg’s Michael Smith has penned a devastating expose detailing Wachovia’s drug-money operations and the government’s twisted response. The bank was moving money behind literally tons of cocaine from violent drug cartels. It wasn’t an accident. Internal whistleblowers at Wachovia warned that the bank was laundering drug money, higher-ups at the bank actively looked the other way in order to score bigger profits, and the U.S. government is about to let everyone involved get off scott free. The bank will not be indicted, because it is official government policy not to prosecute megabanks. From Smith’s story:

No big U.S. bank . . . has ever been indicted for violating the Bank Secrecy Act or any other federal law. Instead, the Justice Department settles criminal charges by using deferred-prosecution agreements, in which a bank pays a fine and promises not to break the law again . . . . Large banks are protected from indictments by a variant of the too-big-to-fail theory. Indicting a big bank could trigger a mad dash by investors to dump shares and cause panic in financial markets.

Wachovia was acquired by Wells Fargo in late 2008. The bank’s penalty for laundering over $380 billion in drug money is going to be a promise not to ever do it again, and a $160 million fine. The fine is so small that Wachovia will almost certainly turn a profit on its drug financing business after legal costs and penalties are taken into account.

FINALLY the moment we’ve all been waiting for..

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

We couldn’t believe it when we saw the new photos from LA today. It seems the moment we’ve all been waiting for…

Brad Pitt shaves beard

We couldn’t believe it when we saw the new photos from LA today. It seems the moment we’ve all been waiting for – for two loooong years – is finally here. Yes, former heart-throb Brad Pitt has shaved off that much-maligned beard.

The actor’s hateful facial hair has been plaited, goatee’d, beaded and – yuckety yucky – just left to do its own horrible, frizzy, greying thing. Honestly, we think Angelina is an absolute saint / mad. And it seems Ms Jolie’s endless pleading (we’re just guessing) was not the reason that Brad has at last relented and reached for the razor. Apparently the chin-fluff has been removed for an acting role – in Mr Pitt’s new movie Moneyball, which he has just started filming – hence, the bare chin and a long-awaited full view of Brad’s gorgeous features (we’d actually forgotten how hot he is). Anyway, these might not be the greatest pics in the world (we suspect Brad may not have been consulted when they were taken), but we just wanted to let you know that the worst is over.

And good riddance!

Study: Attack on Iran would be ‘start of long war’

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Iran’s response to an attack could send oil prices through the roof, think tank argues

An Israeli attack on Iran would fail to stop Tehran’s alleged nuclear weapons program and would lead to a “long war” that would be marked by economic instability and mass civilian casualties, says a study from British think tank.

In a report (PDF) released Wednesday, the Oxford Research Group stated that, while the likelihood of a US attack on Iran’s nuclear program has been lessened by the Obama administration’s policies, advances in Israeli military technology have increased the potential for an Israeli attack.

The study, entitled “Military Action Against Iran: Impact and Effects,” also argues that an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities would galvanize the Iranian public behind the leadership of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and give the regime in Tehran more support and rationale for developing nuclear capabilities.

“An Iranian administration under attack would experience considerable national unity and would work rapidly to redevelop its weapons programs, withdrawing from the NPT and prioritizing nuclear weapons,” the report states.

NEW BLACK PANTHERS, YOU’RE FREE TO GO — NOT SO FAST, ARIZONA

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Ann Coulter

So I guess all that hysteria about the Arizona immigration law was much ado about nothing. After months of telling us that the Nazis had seized Arizona, when the Obama administration finally got around to suing, its only objection was that the law was “pre-empted” by federal immigration law.

With the vast majority of Americans supporting Arizona’s inoffensive little law, the fact that Obama is suing at all suggests that he consulted exclusively with the craziest people in America before filing this complaint. (Which is to say, Eric Holder’s Justice Department.)

But apparently even they could find nothing discriminatory about Arizona’s law. It’s reassuring to know that, contrary to earlier indications, government lawyers can at least read English.

Instead, the administration argues, federal laws on immigration pre-empt Arizona’s law under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution.

State laws are pre-empted by federal law in two circumstances: When there is a conflict — such as “sanctuary cities” for illegals or California’s medical marijuana law — or when Congress has so thoroughly regulated a field that there is no room for even congruent state laws.
