43% Say Neither Political Party in Congress Represents the American People

Monday, October 25th, 2010

“Don’t let the Tea Party fool you. A lot of voters are skeptical of the two major political parties, but most aren’t ready for a third party yet,” the Rasmussen Reports article begins. Like most Americans, they view the Republican usurped “Tea Party” instead of the grassroots efforts by the Libertarians who started it. The Rasmussen Reports poll shows, though, that many are turning to a Libertarian frame of mind which has to be disconcerting to Democrats and Republican parties.

A plurality (43%) of Likely U.S. Voters believes that neither Democrats nor Republicans in Congress are the party of the American people, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Nearly as many see a need for a new third party.

38% think Republicans and Democrats are so much alike that an entirely new party is needed to represent the American people. Fifty percent (50%) say a new third party is not needed. Twelve percent (12%) are undecided. This marks little change from the first time Rasmussen Reports asked this question in early February.

Those who are upset over this “two-party system” are in good company. George Washington warned against it in his farewell speech as he left office after two terms as President.

The two most dangerous words you’ve probably never heard of

Few words in our society have undermined our freedoms as substantially as the word “fair.” This is because the idea of fairness has been twisted and used to change the definition of rights.

The original definition of rights as espoused by the founders was meant to protect “We the People” from all others by providing basic freedoms that could not be infringed upon. These rights provided a basic framework upon which individuals could determine their own destinies. However, they did not provide for or ensure that the outcomes of one’s aspirations, laborers, or laziness would be equal or protected.

Kym Worthy proposes jail for parents who skip kids’ school conferences

Prosecutor wants to punish those who skip kids’ school conferences
Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News

Detroit — Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is pushing for a law that calls for jail time for parents who skip parent-teacher conferences, a plan some call inspired and others consider the nanny state run amok.

Worthy pitched her plan Tuesday to the Detroit City Council and is shopping it to the Wayne County Commission and state Legislature. Drawing a link between parental involvement and youth crime, Worthy wants a sponsor to guide the idea to law.

‘Exterminator’ armored truck will watch Illinois neighborhoods

Monday, October 25th, 2010

BELLEVILLE

Creative law enforcement isn’t new to St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl Justus.

Last year, the dean of the region’s chief cops sponsored a “haunted crack house” that used an old grange hall to depict the life of a young drug addict.

Before that, Justus publicized a “drug house of the week,” aimed at shaming dealers into leaving town.

On Tuesday, his deputies lifted a plastic tarp to unveil his newest idea: an armored truck to park in problem neighborhoods as a vandal-proof platform to transmit live pictures.

“I thought about a lot of names … I thought ‘The Cockroach’ would’ve probably been appropriate, but we settled on ‘The Exterminator,’” Justus told reporters.

The donated and rebuilt armored truck, once used to carry cash, is fitted with cameras, digital recorders and gear to stream live video. Deputies will park it in front of the “dwellings of troublemakers” — for days at a time, if necessary — to reduce nuisance crimes.

“It sends a message,” Justus said. “We will not tolerate drug trafficking, littered lawns, loud noise and other neighborhood nuisances.” He said the cameras should keep criminals on the run and give residents peace of mind.
