County supervisors in Arizona “expressed alarm” over proposed legislation that weakens their authority. Senate Bill 1141 would require counties to approve and appropriate budget of the elected county official in counties with 350,000 people or more and make those payments in lump sum. The other elected county officials would then be responsible for working within that budget.
Current State statute A.R.S. 11-401 lists nine county officers; Sheriff, Recorder, Treasurer, School Superintendent, County Attorney, Assessor, Supervisors, Clerk of the Board of Supervisors and Tax Collector. S.B. 1411 would add Justices of the Peace to the list of statutory officers making them subject to the approve and appropriate form of budgeting.
The new legislation is, apparently, in response to disputes between Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and supervisors.
