Senator Don Shooter motioned to reconsider S.B. 1411 after it failed on a third reading on the first of March. The motion carried so the bill which changes the way counties budget other elected officials is still being considered for passage.
At the same time, S.B. 1322 is unnerving cities larger than 500,000 people. According to the Arizona Chapter of Americans for Prosperity, it may also be unnerving union members.
According to Tom Jenney of Americans for Prosperity, some actual TEA party members belonging to unions have sent emails and made phone calls to Arizona Representative Jerry Weiers to kill the bill in the House Rules Committee. Other union members joined in posing as TEA party members according to an email that Mr. Jenney sent.
S.B. 1322 would require cities larger than 500,000 people to competitively bid municipal services. This law would affect only Phoenix and Tuscon at this time. The closest city to reaching this mark next is Mesa. The bill exempts services such as police, firefighters and tax collectors.
Municipal contracts outsourcing municipal services all ready in affect are also exempt. When the contracts expire, however, the cities will have to issue a call for competitive bids for those services.
A massive retaliatory strike of emails and phone calls, apparently, cause Representative Weiers to see the bill through committee.
