Marvel supporting SOPA, Fans turn against The House of Ideas

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

If you haven’t heard of the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, you might not spend enough time online. But recent exposure of Marvel’s support for the bill has outraged fans across the internet on major comics news sites, blogs and forums and Twitter, calling for retaliation against The House of Ideas.

I understand why Marvel would support the bill. First, and most importantly, being an owned subsidiary of The House of Mouse (Disney/ABC/ESPN, etc) they now have to toe the corporate line. Second, comics are incredibly pirated products. Just doing a search on major bit torrent sites and you can. . . .well, pretty much download most every major Marvel comic from the last 70 years and fit it on a large external hard drive. That’s pretty terrible if you think about it. And, let’s be fair- DC is pro-SOPA as well, at least inasmuch as they are a part of the larger Time Warner family of corporations.

Let me state again, for the record, that we at BSR are ANTI-piracy. We are pro-comics, and piracy is a major problem with the industry today, just as with all entertainment media. We respect the rights of creators who put their genius into delivering greatness into our hands every week, every month, and respect their rights to get paid. We even point you to some of our favorites in the realm of digital comics– one of which, I would like to point out, is about Marvel digital comics on sale. We love comics, we are anti-piracy and pro-digital distribution. Absolutely.

But, just as categorically I can state that SOPA will not help one bit. The bill will allow any person to make a claim against a website (say BigShinyRobot. . . or Google. . . or YouTube. . .or Flikr) that it is hosting copyrighted materials, and without an investigation, without a warrant, without any probable cause– just a complaint– the host ISP has to shut the ENTIRE SITE down. Take, for example, the image I’ve used to in this post. This is one of my favorite comic book covers from books I collected when I was younger. I’ve added the “This is what Wolverine does to Pirates” which makes my use of this image fall under “fair use.” But if someone were to complain, they could– and shut down the entire site without any adjudication by any legal authority. Not only does SOPA violate basic principles of due process, it uses a nuclear bomb to strike at a gnat.

Are public schools constitutional?

Friday, December 30th, 2011

© 2003 Lynn M. Stuter – All Rights Reserved

As the war over education reform – Goals 2000, school-to-work, and “outcome-based education” – rages on, the time is more than ripe to ask ourselves, “Are public schools constitutional?”

Looking at the United States Constitution, no provision is made for education, but the Constitution does instruct that … “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” (Tenth Amendment) In other words, education is reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Why, then, do we have a cabinet level United States Department of Education (US DOE)? Does this not violate the U.S. Constitution? In a word, “yes.” The US DOE was established under the Carter Administration as a political payoff to the teacher unions for their support of Jimmy Carter for president. Ronald Reagan promised to get rid of the US DOE but he didn’t. It was under his watch that the U.S./Soviet Agreement on Education was signed.

Inquiry of the US DOE recently, concerning the constitutional authority on which it was established, brought an interesting response. No doubt many will be surprised to learn that the US DOE was established to help and support states in the area of education; and, therefore, doesn’t require a constitutional mandate.

No doubt those reading federal legislation and laws, replete with “must” and “shall” as condition of receipt of federal tax dollars, would dispute the contention that the US DOE is there merely to help and support states in the matter of education. No doubt a competent constitutional attorney could make the case that federal laws concerning education have, in fact, served to move control of education from the state level to the federal level in violation of the Tenth Amendment.

So, if the Tenth Amendment reserves education to the state level, are public or government schools constitutional at the state level?

Bolivia Set to Pass Historic ‘Law of Mother Earth’ Which Will Grant Nature Equal Rights to Humans

Friday, December 30th, 2011

With the cooperation of politicians and grassroots organizations, Bolivia is set to pass the Law of Mother Earth which will grant nature the same rights and protections as humans. The piece of legislation, called la Ley de Derechos de la Madre Tierra, is intended to encourage a radical shift in conservation attitudes and actions, to enforce new control measures on industry, and to reduce environmental destruction.

The law redefines natural resources as blessings and confers the same rights to nature as to human beings, including: the right to life and to exist; the right to continue vital cycles and processes free from human alteration; the right to pure water and clean air; the right to balance; the right not to be polluted; and the right to not have cellular structure modified or genetically altered. Perhaps the most controversial point is the right “to not be affected by mega-infrastructure and development projects that affect the balance of ecosystems and the local inhabitant communities”.

In late 2005 Bolivia elected its first indigenous president, Evo Morales. Morales is an outspoken champion for environmental protection, petitioning for substantive change within his country and at the United Nations. Bolivia, one of South America’s poorest countries, has long had to contend with the consequences of destructive industrial practices and climate change, but despite the best efforts of Morales and members of his administration, their concerns have largely been ignored at the UN.

Catholic Church holds conference to train priests on how to perform exorcisms

Friday, December 30th, 2011

HELP WANTED: Must be able to travel to Washington D.C. Satan need not apply.

Daily News Staff Writer

The Catholic Church is having a devil of a time searching for priests who can perform exorcisms.

In their effort to fight evil, Catholic bishops are holding a conference aimed at training clergy on how to perform the rite.

According to Bishop Thomas Paprocki, only five or six American priests know how to perform exorcisms, and they are finding themselves overwhelmed with requests.

“Actually, each diocese should have its own resource (person). It shouldn’t be that this burden should be placed on a priest when his responsibility is for his own diocese,” he told the Catholic News Service prior to the two-day conference that ends Saturday in Baltimore.

More than 50 bishops and 66 priests signed up to attend, The Associated Press reported.

How’s that commie, no baby, socially thing workin’ out for ya?

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

With good men in authority, the people rejoice; but with the wicked in power, they groan.—Proverbs 29:2

Reuters and other news sources across the world are reporting the recent rich Chinese couple who had eight babies in China. This is against their strict one-child policy. Poor people in China loose “government entitlements” such as schools and “welfare” for extra children.

Yet Marxists (aka Liberals) won’t get it. The Chinese claim to be practicing “creative capitalism”—as Bill Gates describes it—while we used to call it Communism. The point is that there are “rich” Chinese which means that there must be poor Chinese. Hmmmm.

There is no “Occupy Peking” movement over it because people are afraid of getting shot.

The dreary 1984 was written by George Orwell—whose contribution to society was honored by having the term “Orwellian” added to our lexicon. He wrote Animal Farm, as well, a book that used to be taught in schools.

The impetus of these novels is the fact that Orwell was a Communist. Oh, I apologize. A socialist. He even fought in the Spanish War to see socialism prevail. He became disillusioned with Marxism when he learned that Stalin was killing all of the poor. In fact, Stalin was even killing those who fought to install Communism in the “Former Soviet Union.” In other words, he killed those who were staunch Communists after their usefulness ended. Does that send a message there Mr. Marxist?

The United States has installed Communist program after Communist program and regulation after regulation, with the blessing of both parties, and yet the average liberal cannot figure out why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Allow me to explain it to you. It is simply because in the Communist democratic and fascist constructs, the powerful get more power by over-regulating and taking control of industry so that the poor and unconnected cannot have a chance to make it. Aka Joe the Plumber. That is why the founding fathers railed against monopolies.

That is why the United States was formed as a Republic, not a demonocracy (See Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution of the United States). The republican form of government protects the rights of the 49% from the 51%. That is, also, the reason that initiatives and referendums are not Constitutional additions to our form of government. They could be used as a sort of poll for the opinion of the people, but they cannot have the effect of law anymore than executive orders. Thomas Jefferson stated it in this fashion, “The republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind.” No, he was not talking about the Republican Party of today. French writer Aleix de Tocqueville, who studied the new United States government, warned, “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.”

This is one of the reasons that George Washington was a “non-partisan.” He hated and railed against party-system politics in his Farewell Address. You MUST start thinking for yourself before you go out and vote in 2012. Please, read the founding documents and the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers. Don’t just vote the way your party demands.

TRENTON, N.J.—Official loyalist sources released news, today, that United Nations Peacekeepers stationed in Trenton, New Jersey were slaughtered in an attack by Tea Party terrorists who apparently crossed the Delaware river by night. Early reports indicate 22 of the Peacekeepers were killed and 98 wounded. The brave Colonel Johann Rall may have been wounded in the attack. It is said that the terrorist group was led by George Washington who calls himself a “General.” The Federal Emergency Management Agency has warned local constables against this wanted terrorist, as well as Thomas Jefferson and Paul Revere.

Three American victims in Mexico

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

(CNN) — Three of the seven victims of a highway attack this week in the Mexican state of Veracruz were American citizens, officials said.

A mother and her two daughters, dual Mexican-U.S. citizens who lived in Fort Worth, Texas, were aboard one of three buses that were attacked by gunmen in the city of Panuco, in the northern part of Veracruz.

“We express our deepest condolences to their family and friends during this difficult time,” State Department spokeswoman Neda Brown said.

A Mexican official in the state of Hidalgo, the hometown of the mother, identified the Americans as Maria Sanchez Hernandez and her two daughters, Karla, 19, and Cristina, 13.

Congresswoman wants to stop TSA from calling themselves “officers.”

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (R-7th, Tennessee) has submitted a bill, “To direct the Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security (Transportation Security Administration) to prohibit certain employees of the Transportation Security Administration from using the title of `officer’ and from wearing uniforms and carrying badges resembling those of law enforcement officers.”

The short H.R. 3608, the ‘Stop TSA’s Reach In Policy Act’ or the ‘STRIP Act’ would direct the Assistant Director of Homeland Security to prohibit Transportation Security Administration personnel from wearing metal badges resembling police badges and uniforms that make them appear to be federal officers. They would not even be allowed to use the term “officer.”

She voted for H.R. 1540—the House version of S. 1867, NDAA—which many allege would allow the military to round up American citizens against any of the many wars the government is involving us in and place them in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba or a number of foreign prisons. In the Senate version, Sections 1301 and 1302—which have become known as the “indefinite detention articles”—do not exempt U.S. citizens from imprisonment without trial while most of the other provisions do.

PHOENIX – The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night that ICE refused to take custody of 10 admitted illegal immigrants — 2 of whom are children.

The subjects allegedly told deputies they were in the country illegally and were on their way to New York.

When deputies contacted ICE to turn them over, they reportedly refused. MCSO contacted Border Patrol, which agreed to take custody.

However, deputies have to drive the subjects down to Casa Grande.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he’s concerned.

We wish you a Merry CHRISTmas or a Happy Hanukkah.

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Whether you celebrate CHRISTmas or Hanukkah, we wish you the best during this season.

You might recall our previous Christmas offering, The Flight Before Christmas.

In the spirit of the season, we offer you another CHRISTmas carol to sing to the tune of Santa Clause is Coming to Town.

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I’m telling you no way
Cause the feds ‘ill send you to Gitmo Bay

Holder’s making a list
And checking the same;
Gonna find out who wrote about fast and furious
and mentioned his name.
Then he’ll send ‘em to Gitmo Bay

They see you when you’re sleeping
They know when you’re awake
They know if you’ve protested Obamacare
So they’ll put you on a plane!
(Without TSA fondling!)

O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout
I’m telling you no way
Cause the feds will send you to Gitmo Bay

Firefox Add-On Bypasses SOPA DNS Blocking

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

The pending Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) (H.R. 3261) continues to inspire opponents to come up with creative solutions to circumvent it.

A new anti-SOPA add-on for Firefox, titled “DeSopa,” is such a counter measure.

When installed, users can click a single button to resolve a blocked domain via foreign DNS servers, bypassing all domestic DNS blockades and allowing the user to browse the site though the bare IP-address (if supported).

“I feel that the general public is not aware of the gravity of SOPA and Congress seems like they are about to cater to the special interests involved, to the detriment of Internet, for which I and many others live and breathe,” DeSopa developer T Rizk told TorrentFreak.

Behind Holder’s war on voter-ID laws

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Michael A. Walsh
New York Post

This is not a civil-rights issue, it’s ensuring that everyone’s vote counts.

If you want to buy over-the-counter cold medicine at your local drugstore, chances are you have to show a photo ID to do it. Same if you want to get on a plane, rent a car or open a bank account. So why not to vote?

But to Attorney General Eric Holder, the idea is an outrage. In the name of “civil rights,” he’s declared war on a nationwide movement to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Just this year, eight states have passed new photo-ID laws; more than half now have some form of ID requirement for voting. But Holder has already sicced Justice’s Civil Rights Division on new voter-ID laws in South Carolina and Texas to see if there’s any “disproportionate impact” on minorities. He’s also objecting to reforms in “early voting” in places like Florida, which recently tightened its electoral window.
