Can Our Nation Be Saved?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Townhall

National debt is over $14 trillion, the federal budget deficit is $1.4 trillion and, depending on whose estimates are used, the unfunded liability or indebtedness of the federal government (mostly in the form of obligations for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and prescription drugs) is estimated to be between $60 and $100 trillion.

Those entitlements along with others account for nearly 60 percent of federal spending. They are what Congress calls mandatory or non-discretionary spending. Then there’s discretionary spending, half of which is for national defense. Each year, non-discretionary spending consumes a higher and higher percent of the federal budget.

The spending path that Congress has chosen for the last half-century is unsustainable and will end up with economic collapse but little or nothing can be done about it unless I’m grossly wrong about the American people. Americans who detest our country and those who love our country are hell-bent, wittingly or unwittingly, on destroying it.

You say, “Williams, that’s not only insulting but shows little trust as well. Explain yourself!”

Omnibus double whammy: The Dems’ lame-duck land grabs

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

By Michelle Malkin • December 15, 2010 09:14 AM

Yesterday, Senate Democrats dropped their 1,924-page omnibus spending bomb on Capitol Hill. My column today reports on the other omnibus bomb up their sleeves — a massive omnibus land grab that Dingy Harry Reid vowed yesterday to bring up before the stretched-out lame-duck session ends. It’s green pork galore: “Reid’s staff sees a natural resources omnibus as a rare chance for members to bring something home to their districts and therefore worth the extra time needed to see such a large bill through to completion.”

Many of the items on the enviros’ wish list have been divvied up between the omnibus spending bill and the omnibus lands bill. (I’ve uploaded them both below for easy reference.) A San Francisco Bay restoration grant program pushed by Sen. Boxer (p. 874), Great Lakes watershed program (p. 626), Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta heritage designation (p.880), and Montana forest and watershed plan pushed by Sen. Tester (p. 897) are among the eco-goodies stuffed into the omnibus spending bill. Dozens of other land grabs have been bundled together in the omnibus lands bill, including several projects in Reid’s home state of Nevada, as I note below.

State-‘Controlled’ Russian Company Set to Take Over Wyoming Uranium Mines

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

by Jonathon M. Seidl
December 2, 2010

Why should that cause concern? According to the Record, Rosatom “has provided Iran with uranium in the past.”

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the license transfer of two Wyoming mines to a Russian company, despite concerns over national security raised by local and national government officials including senior House Republicans.

From the Telegram:

Two uranium mines in Wyoming are on their way to control by a Russian company now that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved transferring the mines’ licenses.

New Rules: You And The IRS This January

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

David Nguyen
Activist Post
December 7, 2010

The new ObamaCare1099 rule for reporting of all cash, credit and check business transactions of $600 or more is scheduled to begin January of 2012. This is really an extension of the 2008 Housing and Recovery Act IRS rules that start this January when merchant banks and PayPal will report business sales directly to the IRS (the reporting threshold is $20,000 and 200 transactions a year).

These new IRS rules will affect every American:

• Income tax collection could rise as much as $345 billion a year
• Small businesses will be crushed and unemployment will rise
• A cashless economy is further set in motion
• IRS snooping and audits will increase
• Gold can be tracked
• Identity theft is a risk
• Government surveillance will increase

THE TAX GAP

ObamaCare requires that businesses and self-employed individuals submit 1099 forms to the IRS for all business purchases of $600 or more. The stated purpose for this is to close the ‘tax gap’ which is the difference between the amount of what is “owed” and what is paid, due to lack of reporting and under-reporting, and is estimated at $300 billion dollars a year. Last week, the Senate failed to repeal the ObamaCare 1099 rule because they could not agree on how to make up the “lost” revenue that would be generated from strict reporting, which they estimated to be $19 billion over 10 years, which is a GROSS underestimate.

I see something suspicious

Monday, December 6th, 2010

by Glen C. Davis

The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security has asked us to report any suspicious activity that we might find. Here is my report.

I see a government that has trampled over the Constitution and my rights that were laid out by the founding fathers.

In the Supreme Court decision of Barron ex rel. Tiernan v. Mayor of Baltimore, Justice John Marshall ruled that the first Eight Amendments to the Constitution of the United States—aka, the unalienable Bill of Rights—apply to the federal government; meaning that the Ninth and Tenth amendment apply to both the federal and State governments. That means that the Second Amendment applies specifically to the federal government. Yet the Congress—ignoring decades of precedence—have passed laws regulating and restricting my right to own firearms and weapons. The Congress has legislated the ability for federal agencies to violate my Fourth Amendment rights through the Patriot Act.

Senate passes sweeping food safety bill

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

By Lyndsey Layton
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 30, 2010; 12:57 PM

The Senate on Tuesday approved the biggest overhaul to the nation’s food safety laws since the 1930s. The 73-to-25 vote gives vast new authorities to the Food and Drug Administration, places new responsibilities on farmers and food companies to prevent contamination, and — for the first time – sets safety standards for imported foods, a growing part of the American diet.

The most vocal opponent of the food safety bill, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), argued it would create new layers of bureaucracy without making food safer. He said a better solution would be to ensure that FDA and other federal agencies do their jobs more effectively.

“The problem with food safety is the agencies don’t do what they’re supposed to be doing now,” Coburn said. “They don’t need more regulations. They need less.”

Congress image not improving according to Rasmussen Reports.

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Most voters continue to give this Congress poor marks in its closing days, and they still don’t believe the national legislature has passed anything to significantly improve life in America.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that just 11% give the current Congress good or excellent marks. Sixty percent (60%) say Congress is doing a poor job. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

There is currently a petition drive to Secure the Border or Relocate ALL Congressional Offices There! A group from Arlington, Virginia known as Rally Congress started the petition drive and challenges Congress members to secure the border between the United States and Mexico or to move their offices along the troubled border.

The petition reads, in part:

If you sincerely agree with Secretary Napolitano and President Obama that “the border is secure” then you must immediately relocate all federal offices for all members of Congress (House, Senate, Supreme Court, and all Staffers) from the District of Columbia to the border in Arizona, California, or Texas. Relocation of our federal offices may finally provide the necessary incentive to secure our borders – sense the illegal drug trade, illegal immigrant population, murders, rapes, and other illegal activities have not.

You can sign the petition which generates an email to your members of Congress.

House fails to overturn veto of H.R. 3808

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

RECOGNIZING INTERSTATE NOTARIZATIONS: The House failed to override a presidential veto of the Interstate Recognition of Notarizations Act (H.R. 3808). The bill would have required federal and state courts to recognize notarizations made by notary publics outside the state in which the court was located if the notarization related to interstate commerce. The vote, No. 573, was 185 yeas to 235 nays.

Arizona Congressmen voted along party lines with Democrats Kirkpatrick, Grijalva, Pastor, Mitchell, Giffords voting against overturning the veto and Republicans Franks, Shadegg, Flake voting for overturning the veto.

Congress is still bickering over whether to pass H.R. 6419 to extend unemployment benefits. However, the did agree to Congratulate Joe Paterno on his 400th win as Penn State Nittany Lions football coach and to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 2 Government Center in Fall River, Massachusetts, as the Sergeant Robert Barrett Post Office Building.

Rep. Charles Rangel offers apology to supporters for ethics shenanigans

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Humbled Harlem Rep. Charlie Rangel offered up a formal mea culpa to his supporters on Monday following ethics shenanigans that have him facing a humiliating censure.

“I apologize for the embarrassment I have brought upon you,” Rangel told his fans in an email, his most extensive comments since an ethics panel recommended last Thursday he be censured for 11 violations of House rules.

Rangel admitted there is no excuse for improperly raising funds for a center at City College bearing his name – or failing to pay taxes on rental income from his Dominican Republic villa.

Democrats plan vote on middle-class tax cuts

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

By Kim Dixon and Richard Cowan
WASHINGTON | Thu Nov 18, 2010 7:27pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Congressional Democrats said on Thursday they would vote to extend Bush-era tax cuts for the lower and middle classes only, setting up a clash with Republicans only two weeks after midterm elections.

The moves end days of hand-wringing by Democrats to find a common strategy before a December 31 deadline for expiration of tax cuts for nearly all Americans and a Republican takeover of the House of Representatives next year.

A clash over taxes augurs badly for any chance that the two parties will work together after this month’s elections on major issues like cutting the budget deficit and creating jobs.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said he believes he has President Barack Obama’s support in pursuing tax cuts for everyone except the wealthy, after some concern that Obama had been ready to deal with Republicans over cuts for the rich.

“The main thing we’ve learned is that we’re united in recognizing that we have to protect the middle class,” Reid told reporters.

TODAY Congress Will Try – By Secret Vote – to Retroactively Legalize Foreclosure Fraud and Forgery By the Big Banks

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

… Call Congress and Say NO

As I’ve previously noted, forgery of mortgage documents is systematic and widespread. See this, this, this, this and this.

Yves Smith pointed out last month that congressional bill H.R. 3808 is an attempt to paper over rampant criminality by the big banks regarding forged mortgage documents:

We are seeing more recognition of the consequences of this [widespread problem] , which in more polite company might be called, “My dog ate your mortgage.”
