Williams Tea Party, March 14, 2011

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

The former Western Coconino County Tea Party Patriots began meeting again on Monday March 14, led by Joyce Mechtley, to re-organize the group. The group meet informally to discuss various topics.

Joyce announced a general TEA Party meeting of various Arizona groups on Saturday in Prescott.

It was decided to change the name to the Williams Tea Party as that is what the Flagstaff group refers to them as. The group will still serve for members from Ash Fork, Valle and the surrounding area.

It was decided, also, that the meetings would be held the second Monday of each month. If the group grows to the extent of last year, a board will be selected and board meetings will be held from 6 to 7 pm. The general meeting will follow from 7 to 8:30 pm.

The group will also start a web site as soon as possible. The web site will be administered by Glen Davis. The web site address will most likely be williamsteaparty.com. The plan for the web site is to utilize blog software to make it easier for members to contribute to the site.

George Lockhart brought up the Spring Flower Ranch development and wondered if we could obtain the State growth plan. The Spring Flower Ranch was, apparently, a development planned in Parks which, so far, has suffered due to the economy.

John Lee brought up concerns about the Perrin Ranch wind farm project. Concerns are that the wind generators will not produce enough electricity to be profitable enough to sustain. Eventually, tax payers or APS customers will have to pay extra to keep them running as has happened in England.

There was, also, discussion concerning finding suitable candidates to replace Coconino County Supervisors and other officers.

Reward offered for information on person starting Schultz Fire

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Flagstaff, AZ – The U.S. Forest Service is seeking information concerning the person or persons responsible for causing the Schultz Fire, which has cost nearly $3 million in suppression costs.

The Forest Service is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The Schultz fire was caused by a campfire that was abandoned without being properly extinguished in the area of Schultz Tank, Little Elden Trail, and Forest Road 420.

The fire has spread to 14,800 acres and is currently 40% contained. The expected containment date is July 2. The 3800-acre Eagle Rock fire is considered 90% contained and poses no threat to visitors to Williams. Highway 89 through Flagstaff and 64 are apparently still open.

Please call the Schultz Fire Investigations hotline at (928) 527-3508 if you have any information.

Eagle Rock Fire near contained; Schultz fire still blazes.

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Helicopter flies over Schultz fire near Flagstaff---This and That Online Blog.

Flagstaff, Williams-The 3,400 acre Eagle Rock Fire 11 miles north east of Williams in northern Arizona is ninety-percent contained as of a few hours ago. The cause of the fire, which started on June 11, is still unknown. Williams has been unaffected by smoke and fire. The Williams Ranger District thanks all of the cooperating agencies that have assisted on this incident.

The 14,000 acre Schultz-Elden Trail fire north of Flagstaff is considered 20% contained with a low wind condition today helping fire fighters. Highway 89 is open in both directions with some delays to be expected. Evacuated areas include Timberline, Wupatki Estates, Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument, Hutchinson Acres, and scattered residences north of Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument.

Current plans are to continue to construct line and improve, and burn out line on the south, southeast, and north flanks of the fire, continue to patrol, and mop up on the east flank and monitor and control fire on the west with air operations.

This fire was started by a reckless camper leaving a smoldering camp fire. Fire restrictions in the Kaibab, Prescott and Coconino National Forests are now in effect. No smoking or camp fires are allowed outside of developed camp sites. Because of the fire danger, propane camp stoves are recommended. It is recommended that you camp only in developed camp sites so as not to get trapped. If you are hiking, let someone know where you are going and carry a cell phone for communications.

Condoms at the Recreation Center not condoned.

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Condoms given out in Williams by County Health Department.

WILLIAMS—Kids at the Williams Youth and Recreation center—and Mayor John Moore, returning from vacation—got a surprise during their normal Wednesday movie night. Tooth brushes and condoms. Rose Newbold is seeking an apology from Joleen Burdick who handed out the material.

On Wednesday, May 12, the Coconino County Health Department held a “Williams Healthy Smile” event at the Williams Adult Activities Center. There were apparently no condoms offered at the event.

The Williams Youth and Recreation Center holds activities each evening and this evening was movie night. According to the daily log for the Williams Youth Recreation Center staff indicated that they shut the movie off at approximately 6:10 so Burdick could hand out toothbrushes to children as young as five-years old. Staff believed Burdick was going to give dental care instructions, but Burdick handed out the toothbrushes and left so the scheduled activity for that evening resumed.

During the movie, staff was approached by one of the youth that had been outside and was informed that “little brown bags” with condoms had been handed out by Ms Burdick. The staff person in charge went outside and found condoms and the rest of the contents of the “brown bags” strewn around the park. The staff on duty spent a portion of the night cleaning up and disposing of the items.
